These chickens lived a happy life as laying hens roaming around our orchard and pasture searching for bugs and grass, supplemented by certified organic feed. We cull half of our flock every few years in order to make way for new chicks. They were processed by Osprey Hill Butchery in a WSDA licensed facility. Since these hens were not raised specifically for meat and lived a number of years longer than meat birds, their meat may be a little “gamey” and tougher than usual. However, they have a lot of golden fat that makes for very rich chicken stock. These hens are best for soup, stock, enchiladas, etc. Each chicken weighs about 3 lbs.
